How to Choose Stylish Shoes that Can Accommodate Orthotics

So, you've finally found that the solution to your hip/back/knee/foot problem is wearing custom orthotic inserts. Sadly, once you start using orthotics, wearing certain designs of high heels, sandals and other cute shoes is out of question. However, that doesn't mean that you're destined to walk in ugly footwear your whole life. Take it from me. I've been wearing orthotics for 5 years now and I still get to look more fabulous than ever!

So, the question now is what type of shoes can you wear that can discreetly fit your orthotics and still look stylish enough. Over the years I have experimented with different designs and can tell you a thing or two about what works and what doesn't. To help you find orthotic-friendly footwear that you'll wear with confidence, here are some tips.

Wide is Always Right

Once you fit the orthotics in, the shoe has less room for your foot. With that being said, the number one tip is to start looking for designs that are wider than your foot is. Whether you look for orthotic flats or boots, make sure that they have extra width at the sides and depth at the toes and the heel. This will allow the foot to comfortably slide into the shoe. Additionally, shoes with removable insoles can offer more depth. This is especially helpful when you want to wear socks with your orthotics.

Orthopaedic Features that Are Perceived as Stylish

To make sure your orthotic and orthopaedic shoes add a touch of refinement to your outfits, always look for the following features. First of all – the upper. Uppers made of materials such as velour, or with a leather or metallic finish, instead of plain canvas finishes make the shoes appear more fashionable, regardless whether they're orthopaedic or not. Additionally, the soles also affect how dressy and stylish a shoe appears. Very thick, rubber soles that stick out on the sides of the shoe, are something that you want to avoid. Instead, look for sleek soles that blend in with the shoes. The less noticeable the soles are, the better looking the shoes.

Go for Orthotic-friendly Brands

The range of orthopaedic shoes has changed a lot over the years. No longer are bulky and ugly designs the norm. Now you can choose orthopaedic and orthotic flats, boots, and even heels to some extent that are sleek and modern. Just look for brands that strive to blend style with comfort, like for instance Klouds, Ziera, Arcopedico, Vionic, Waldlaufer, Mephisto and similar brands. You can find these internationally famous brands at Australian online shops that specialize in orthopaedic footwear.
