What to Look for in a Pocket Flashlight?

Lately we have all been using our phones to look through the dark. However, nothing beats a proper handheld flashlight, and not only for people that need them for work. Nowadays, flashlights have become multipurpose tools, that provide many benefits, for any occasion. In fact, flashlights are considered to be part of the recommended everyday carry (EDC)essentials for anyone, because it's really easy to always have on you.

Why Do You Need a Pocket LED Flashlight?

Regardless whether it's for something simple like to find something we lost under the couch, to walk our dog, we are doing a DIY project, or there is a power outage; or if we need it as part of our gear for different activities such as hiking, camping, hunting... or for our job – everyone needs to have a good quality flash light.

Fortunately, there are options other than big heavy flashlights. This is because there are torches that can be really small and light, and yet very powerful. Having a pocket LED flashlight like this with you at all times, apart from being extremely useful – to provide you with light in front of you, is very practical.

Of course, one of the main reasons is that their size allows you to have them in your pocket at all time, as the name suggests. However, it should be noted that the fact that they are smaller in size, doesn't mean that they don't provide enough light for purposes other than finding something at home in the dark.

Pocket Flashlight Performances

Output

The light output is measured in lumens – a measure of intensity of the light that comes out of the torch, on the highest brightness setting. Flashlights can go from 20 to 350 lumens.

Everyday carry flashlights come in many different types, and with different outputs, battery capacities, as well as maximum beam distance. From a standard pocket torch with around 100-300 lumens, a pen light with as little as 5 lumens, torches with one brightness setting, up to beast compact torches with max output of 2000 lumens with multiple brightness settings, and with the size of a lighter, and weight of around 130 g.

Throw

One more thing you need to think about is the beam distance – or how far will the torch throw the light. If you don't need it for your job, you don't have to look for the most powerful flashlight with some unbelievable throw of 700 metres. A pocket LED flashlight with a beam distance of anything between 10 and 200 metres can be used for different everyday tasks.

Water and Impact Resistance

Apart from being very small, light, and compact, while also capable of providing a lot of light, LED pocket torches can also be waterproof and extremely durable and rugged, with high impact resistance.

Features

Furthermore, EDC pocket flashlights come with many different useful features. One of the most popular ones is the pocket clip some of them have, that isn't only useful for keeping your flashlight safe, but also, it can serve you to attach your flashlight to something, to allow you to use both hands, while the light is on.

Batteries

Pocket torches can be powered by rechargeable or non-rechargeable batteries. USB-rechargeable flashlights are perfect for people who need to do things in the dark all the time. They mostly use lithium-ion batteries, that can last for years. They are better for harsh weather conditions. They are more expensive, if you are someone who uses them often, but over time they will save you money. Rechargeable LED flashlights are also the eco-friendlier option.

Non-rechargeable pocket flashlights can also a good choice, especially if you aren't going to be using them all the time. Disposable batteries are cheap and very easy to find, as well, meaning you could have a spare pack of batteries, so you can use your torch whenever you need.

However, for someone who needs flashlights all the time, or if you are going for in the nature during the night, non-rechargeable pocket flashlights aren't a great option, since you'd always need a spare pack. Buying batteries all the time isn't really cost-effective – in fact, you'd end up spending more money. Furthermore, keep in mind that disposable batteries don't perform well in low temperature, and if it's too cold, not only can they freeze or malfunction, but they could burst and destroy the flashlight.

Light Source

Flashlights that use LED as light source are a fairly new lighting tool. They have been a huge advancement. They are more resilient and more reliable than flashlights that use other types of lights, and though they have a higher cost up front, they are a great investment in the long run.

LED lights are highly energy efficient. They produce less heat and more light, and they last much longer than other lights. Since they use less power to produce light, they save batteries. This is good for both rechargeable and non-rechargeable pocket flashlights.

Furthermore, they are environmentally friendlier, because lower energy consumption means smaller carbon footprint. But LED lights aren't considered to be green only because they use less electricity. Since they last longer, less replacement products are used.
